Photovoltaic Installation Course

New dates & times!
July 9-11th and 16th-18th from 6-9 pm
July 12th and 19th from 9 am - 5 pm

To better accommodate the busy schedules of interested participants we are rescheduling this workshop outside of traditional work hours.  The workshop will take place over two weeks with six evenings in the classroom and two full Saturdays in the field.

Self-Reliance is offering a 40-hour installation course for those looking for hands-on training with photovoltaic technology. The course will run from 6 - 9 pm on  July 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18 and from 9 am to 5 pm on July 12 and 19.  This course introduces students to the fundamentals of photovoltaic system design and installation procedures. The class will be divided between indoor classroom activities and fieldwork, which will involve the installation of a residential scale PV system. The installation portion of the course will be taking place at a job site in Brewster.

   Classroom topics include:
  • Basics of electricity
  • Solar site analysis
  • PV system components
  • Energy efficient appliances
  • PV system sizing
  • Component specification
  • Stand-alone systems
  • Utility-interactive systems
  • Electrical wiring
  • Safety procedures
  • Operation and maintenance
Who should attend?

Two full days are spent in the field working on the actual grid-tied photovoltaic installation. It is essential that closed-toe shoes are worn on site and that each attendee has ample sunscreen and rain gear with them since we never know what the weather is going to be in July on Cape Cod!

Tools are not required, but attendees may bring their own tools, but they must be marked clearly with your name.  Suggested tools to bring are: wire strippers, cordless drill, needle nosed pliers, tape measure, utility knife, screw-driver.

Please bring a notebook and writing implements. You may want to bring some colored pencils in black, red and green for making schematic notations.

The text we will be using for the course is: Photovoltaic Systems, by Jim Dunlop, PE in partnership with NJATC.

This is a working workshop where active participation is required

The cost for this course is $750, which includes the textbook, lunch and break snacks.
Registration is limited to 14 participants.
